Appendix: War and God in My Own Life
War has been an important part of my family history. My ancestors fought in the Civil War,
and it seems I've always know about Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Jeb Stuart, and other great
southern leaders. Their skill, daring and devotion to duty in a heroic but lost cause stirred my
imagination as a boy. The concept of the officer as a gentleman and a warrior shaped my life and
especially my career as a Marine Corps officer.
